Hot Line

In an interview with Матч ТВ (Match TV) on Wednesday, Russian Grandmaster Sergey Alexandrovich Karjakin revealed that, regardless of the outcome of his eventual appeal, FIDE Director General Emil Davidovich Sutovsky will personally take care of having him excluded from the 2022 Candidates Tournament anyway. He got such information from Sutovsky himself by a stratagem worthy of a spy: “I just received information from FIDE Director General Sutovsky that he will be pushing to further disqualify me — six months are not enough for them. How did I find out? A prankster friend of mine called him on behalf of the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine. Sutovsky told him that he is ready to resign his post if I will not be kicked off. This is the typical way of officials — starting small”, Karyakin said.
Sutovsky’s resentful answer was not long in coming: “Banned Karyakin hits new lows, arranging a deep-fake prank call to me on behalf of Ukrainian Minister of Sports V. Gutzeit. I am not ashamed of what I said there, but the very fact Karjakin masterminds it, quoting me in Russian media right after a call, says it all”, he tweeted.
And last but not least, FIDE was quoted by RBC as saying: “All we can say at this point is that Karjakin’s deadline to appeal is April 11. So far, he has not exercised his right. In principle, his disqualification cannot be extended. But if he persists in violating the FIDE Code of Ethics in the future, there is the possibility of new charges being laid upon him”.
