Bits of Sky

Have a good trip home!

As we prepared for the 8th round, we were suddenly told that the Candidates Tournament was suspended, with the remaining half to be rescheduled. All foreigners must leave Russia today, otherwise their fate is unpredictable!
In a panic, officials and players packed their belongings and went downstairs to the hotel reception in order to be ready for departure. Most of them left their separate ways. I hear that Giri and his second l’Ami were informed earlier and bought an expensive ticket at 3 P.M. to get to Moscow for a flight to Amsterdam; Chinese 丁立人 (Dīng Lìrén), too, booked an expensive ticket and went to the airport; I didn’t see 侯逸凡 (Hóu Yìfán), either. Later I learn that she has somehow managed to arrive at the airport. Fortunately, I find out that Jeroen van den Berg, Lennart Ootes, Caruana and Vachier-Lagrave are to return to the Netherlands with me. Jeroen, as befits the consummate organiser of the Tata Steel Chess Tournament, is calm. He says with a smile that since we’re close to famous chess players, we won’t be left behind. Sure enough, our itinerary maker gives us good news. FIDE President Arkady Vladimirovich Dvorkovich is also taking care about everyone’s needs. Tonight a charter flies directly from Amsterdam to Yekaterinburg! Can you believe it?
