The above picture shows a panoramic view on the seating hall of the Yekaterinburg-Expo exhibition and congress centre, which on Monday hosted the opening ceremony of the Candidates Tournament. This lucky shot by Lennart Ootes was briefly available for download but then removed from the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) Flickr account following harsh criticism over such a mass gathering, in defiant neglect, 13th World Chess Champion Garry Kimovich Kasparov lamented, of “all international guidance & common sense. Tragic”. Yet the tragedy shines in all its “magnitude” by virtue of only one small red figure who asserts her control over an audience of about 1,200 people. Photo © Lennart Ootes.
