Il 1958 fu un anno di crisi per la FSI, con le dimissioni dell’anziano segretario Alberto Fidi e del presidente Szabados. Non si giocò nemmeno il campionato italiano, ma fra il 28 dicembre e il 4 gennaio si svolse, un po’ in sordina, un piccolo torneo internazionale a Reggio Emilia, che sostituì nel calendario internazionale il torneo di Capodanno di Lucerna: fu l’inizio di una straordinaria tradizione scacchistica.

Ci dispiace vedere che La Rivista degli Scacchi, la competente rivista di scacchi italiana che Dubois ha pubblicato a Roma dall’inizio del 1859, annuncia in uno degli ultimi numeri dello scorso anno, la sua cessazione a dicembre. Le ragioni addotte sono il presente stato politico dell’Italia e la conseguente incertezza delle convenzioni postali fra Roma e gli stati settentrionali.

Nonostante l’insigne quinto premio nel celeberrimo Torneo Internazionale del 1862 a Londra, Serafino Dubois non poté partecipare al più frivolo torneo ad handicap – specialità nella quale il Maestro romano eccelleva – per non aver corrisposto in tempo le tre sterline d’iscrizione. Dimostrò comunque la sua valentia nei cosiddetti “giuochi di vantaggio” anche negli elitari circoli londinesi in parties sans façon contro i maggiorenti cittadini. Per esempio contro Valentine Green – già suo primo avversario nel Torneo Internazionale – contro il quale dominò a Pedone e tratto:
