Never Look Back

Semper cum mihi diceretur esse
secreto mea Polla cum cinaedo,
inrupi, Lupe. Non erat cinaedus.

The current rumor would indict
My Polla and a sodomite.
I caught them. Rumor wasn’t right.

A me si raccontava
che la Polla mia
sovente si appartava
con un culattone.
Un dì faccio irruzione
e aguzzo l’occhio:
altro che finocchio!

Moral insolvency

Sexte, nihil debes, nil debes, Sexte, fatemur.
Debet enim, si quis solvere, Sexte, potest.

You are not debtor, one and all we say,
He only owes, who has the power to pay.

Tu non hai debiti, o Sesto; è vero, che tu non ne hai;
debiti ha, Sesto, colui che soddisfare li può.

Martial, Epigrams, Book 2, III
English translation by A. L. Francis, M.A. and H. F. Tatum, M.A.

Yes or No

人要改变,不外乎两个原因:不是开窍了,就是心碎了。
Rén yào gǎibiàn, bù wài hū liǎng gè yuányīn: bùshì kāiqiàole, jiùshì xīn suìle.
People change for two main reasons: either their minds have been opened or their minds have been broken.

AD PAULAM

Moechus erat: poteras tamen hoc tu, Paula, negare.
Ecce vir est: numquid, Paula, negare potes?

A PAOLA

Era il tuo drudo, ma allora potevi dir, Paola, che no.
Ecco è il tuo sposo: Paola, dirai ancora che no?

TO PAULA

He was your lover; yet this, Paula, you once could deny.
Behold, he is your husband; can you deny it now?
